After completing a half marathon with a friend whom I had talked into training with me, she offered her own challenge: It was "National November Writer's Month" and I must now write a novel. All I needed to do was write 50,000 words in one month.
I wrote 150,000.
And so began my writing journey.
YA Historical Fantasy Romance
Wordcount 82K
Gone are those who remember when Dagda brought magic to Ireland, and few are those who still believe. In the sixteenth century, the secrets and treasures of Éirinn are closely guarded, each by a clan or a bloodline. Two possible heirs to King Niall’s forgotten throne hold access to a mysterious treasure reputedly so great that men would kill to obtain it.
Neither heir knows the power they wield. But one man has traced the bloodlines, and he’ll stop at nothing to unlock Dagda’s Treasure for himself.
When a bejeweled Turkish knife turns up at her Bristol home, seventeen-year-old Alana Steward’s father gives her an amulet that belonged to her mother and hastily sends her to the last place he imagines anyone will look for her—the estate in Ireland they had fled over a decade ago after her mother’s mysterious murder.
When street-rat Kean U’Neill is hired by a shady Turkish ship’s captain to steal an amulet, he thinks it’s an easy meal ticket for him and his neurodiverse brother. But when Kean fails to deliver, not only does the captain refuse to let him out of his contract, he amends the job to include the abduction of the girl who wears the amulet. If Kean does not comply, his brother’s life is at stake.
Alana’s stark resemblance to her dead mother stirs up gossip in the local townsfolk, and her own childhood memories awaken as she pieces together lore and legend. A strange magic pulls around her, and she realizes the legends are real, and she is an heir. As she unravels the truth behind her mother’s death, alarming signs point to the family of the charming clan Tánaiste she’s falling in love with. If she can’t rein in her heart, she may be the next corpse.
As Kean tries to outsmart the Turkish captain and flee with his brother, he learns the truth of his own family and why the captain chose him. His pure U’Neill bloodline makes him heir to Dagda’s treasure. The untold riches are too tempting to abandon, and when he discovers Alana’s tie to the throne is the only thing standing in his way, he must decide how far he’s willing to go.
MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION ABOUT THIS TITLE
Ethna's Secret is the first title in a three-book series.
Ethna’s Secret was inspired by my first visit to the Hill of Tara in County Meath, Ireland. I had always wanted to visit the place of my namesake, and I was not disappointed. There was something magical about this otherwise unremarkable hill.
Standing there amidst the rolling green landscape, a sturdy wind enveloped me as a fine mist of rain sprinkled around me like fairy dust. My own visceral experience alone on that hill was the first scene I wrote. The story fell into place around it.
And boy did it fall. The words just kept coming until I realized I had a trilogy on my hands. Ethna’s Secret is the first book in a 3-part series full of family secrets, Irish legends, mystical weapons, Barbary corsairs, Spanish galleons, and characters I would follow to the ends of the earth.
